This image represents a White Pine - Pinus strobus witches' broom that has been propagated into a new White Pine cultivar. The plant is a result of grafting a scion from a witches' broom onto a normal White Pine rootstock. The plant is then allowed to grow in a nursery for a few years to make sure it is stable and then introduced as a new cultivar. Many new and dwarf cultivars of plants are introduced into the nursery industry by way of this method. The plant pictured here is about 40 years old. A normal white pine would be about 50 feet tall and 30 feet wide after 40 years. |
