This is an image of the fruit/berries of Ilex opaca commonly known as American Holly. American Holly is indigenous to Connecticut. I started this particular plant from hardwood cuttings during the winter about seven years ago. The fruit is relished by birds including bluebirds which feed on them during the winter and late winter months. The plants are easily propagated from hardwood and softwood cuttings in a Wardian Case. I planted a hedge of these at the western edge my pond. These plants grow spectacularly along the south shore of New Jersey where I gained a further appreciation for them. This plant also seems to do well as far south as Orlando, Florida where I saw some good specimens growing at Disney World. |
