Digitalis-purpurea-'Mixed-C

This is an image of a grouping of Digitalis purpurpea plants commonly known as Foxglove. Digitalis purpurea is a biennial which means that the plant flowers the second year after seed germination. I started these plants in early summer of 2006 and they were subsequently transplanted to the garden in the fall of the same year. This image was taken in June 2007. Before the flowers matured the flower stalks were removed and put into a vase that made a beautiful, long lasting cut flower arrangement. By not letting the plant go to seed (removing the flower stalks) I tricked the plants into blooming for a third year now 2008. The heart medication digitalis is derived from this plant.
