Amanita.jpg

Steve:  This is an image of the ubiquitous Amanita muscaria mushroom. The Amanita mushroom grows abundantly throughout the Bella Coola valley. The biggest specimens I observed were located in the Bella Coola river delta area also known as the tide flats where they would reach greater than one foot (approx. 30 centimeters) in diameter. These photographed specimens were taken during the summer and so in this image they are cracked, shrunken and nearly dehydrated. The mushrooms grow quite large with the seasonal rains in the fall season. Some additional references pertaining to Amanita muscaria may be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amanita_muscaria
